South: a scholarly journal, the Department of American Studies and the University of North Carolina Press are pleased to announce our first annual Prize for Outstanding Graduate Scholarship, consistent with the themes explored in this journal. We encourage global and hemispheric comparative scholarship that is interdisciplinary and binds together many possible facets of “southern” experience, thereby shifting our understanding of what it means to be “of the South.” These essays might explore aspects of both the American South and other Souths, or the global crosscurrents linking region, culture and identity. This presents an exciting opportunity to break the mold and to engage in new forms of scholarly and sometimes creative inquiry. Further information and inspiration can be found at southjournal.org.
The prize for the best essay, as selected by our advisory board, will be $1,000 with the possibility of publication in the journal. A $500 prize will be awarded for the essay selected as an honorable mention. Submissions will be accepted online at southjournal.org until April 1st of 2018. While there is no hard word count, we recommend submissions be between 5,500 and 6,500 words in length.
